In a study of 80 healthy men aged 22-80 years, the researchers found men aged over 44 years who consume a lot of vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and folate, have high levels of sperm DNA damage 20 percent lower.
Even so, the benefits of micronutrient consumption were not found in male sperm younger.
"It appears regularly consume micronutrients such as vitamin C, E, folic acid and zinc, can restore the quality of sperm from older men. We found damage male sperm aged 44 years and over was almost equal to the younger," said Andy Wyrobek of Life Sciences Division, one of the researchers.
The results are important because the current shift in the age of marriage and a growing number of men who had had a child over the age of 35 years. In fact, the older the age of the man the more damage their sperm so that the greater the risk of experiencing infertility.
Until now, scientists do not yet know whether a diet high in antioxidants and micronutrients may protect sperm DNA damage. Depth research is needed to determine whether vitamin intake can improve the quality of sperm and improve fertility elderly men.
